Conservation of plant species.
During the construction of the Mediterranean Motorway, ACCIONA placed special emphasis on saving and conserving the natural vegetation of the area.
ACCIONA Infrastructures started work on the Mediteranean Motorway in 2006 at the Guadalfeo–La Gorgoracha section which is to be part of the motorway linking Granada and Motril. Almost all of the roadway covers mountainous areas partly cultivated with tropical fruit, or covered with natural vegetation.
As part of ACCIONA Infrastructures’ efforts to save several of the existing species, an agreement was signed with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) to transplant them, take cuttings and collecting seeds from samples of the protected species affected by the path of the motorway.
During the construction, the species to be saved were kept in optimum conditions in plant nurseries, prepared for the purpose with the construction of greenhouses. Included among the species to be saved are Rosmarinus tomentosus, Bussus Balearica and Maytenus senegalensis.
On completion of the work, plants of these species were replanted in the spaces adjacent to the Motorway thus regenerating the habitat.
